How to Lookup Guest Post Opps on Ahrefs

A step-by-step field guide to finding sites worth pitching — read straight off the screen, the same way we run it for client campaigns every week.

DR 30–70+quality floor 4 methodscontent · links · authors · gaps 5-pointsniff test Monthlyrefresh cycle

You lookup guest post opps on Ahrefs by running three core searches. Content Explorer finds active blogs in your niche. Link Intersect finds warm leads your competitors already earned. Author Footprints find sites with no public pitch page at all. Each method pulls a different layer of the same map.

At Backlink Garden, we run this exact workflow every week for client campaigns. Below, I will walk you through it live, the same way I would open Ahrefs on my own screen right now.

Definitions

What Does It Mean to Lookup Guest Post Opps on Ahrefs?

Looking up guest post opps on Ahrefs means using its databases of pages, links, and keywords to find sites that accept outside contributors. You are not guessing. You are reading real signals: Domain Rating, organic traffic, referring domains, and backlink profile shape.

Google search operators do the same job in theory. Ahrefs just layers the quality data on top, so you skip a dozen manual checks per site.

Why Not Just Search “Write for Us” on Google?

Because everyone else already did. A plain Google search for "write for us" + your niche returns the same 200 tired blogs every SEO has pitched since 2019. Editors at those sites get flooded. Your reply rate drops before you even hit send.

Ahrefs solves this by letting you filter that same footprint search through DR, traffic, and freshness data. You end up with a shorter, cleaner list, and you can spot the sites nobody else bothered to check.

Before You Start

What Do You Need Before You Start Looking Up Guest Post Opportunities?

You need three things: access to Ahrefs, a defined quality bar, and a niche keyword list. Skip any one of these and you will drown in irrelevant results within ten minutes.

Do You Need an Ahrefs Paid Plan for This?

Yes, for real prospecting work. A free trial lets you test the workflow once. But Content Explorer, Link Intersect, and export functions sit behind paid tiers. Ahrefs’ entry plans cap how many domains you can crawl per day, and that cap scales up as you move to higher tiers. If you are only hunting opportunities for one site, a Lite or Standard plan covers you. If you are running this across dozens of client sites, like we do at Backlink Garden, you will want a higher tier for the crawl volume alone.

What Should You Define Before Prospecting? (Goal Setting)

Before you type a single keyword into Content Explorer, decide three numbers:

  • Your minimum acceptable Domain Rating (30 is a common floor)
  • Your minimum monthly organic traffic (1,000 visits keeps out zombie sites)
  • Your target audience’s country, if location matters to your business
Write these down. They become your filters in the next section — and they stop you from wasting an afternoon on sites that look impressive but send zero real readers.
Method 01

How Do You Find Guest Post Opportunities Using Ahrefs Content Explorer?

Open Ahrefs now and click Content Explorer in the top navigation. This tool is your first landmark, the equivalent of a link builder’s town square. Everything else in this walkthrough branches out from here.

Step 1 — Which Search Operators Actually Work in Content Explorer?

Type your niche keyword combined with a guest-post footprint. Use the “In content” or “In title” dropdown next to the search bar to control where Ahrefs looks for your phrase.

A working query looks like this:

(“write for us” OR “guest post” OR “become a contributor”) AND [your niche]

Swap “write for us” occasionally for less common phrases like “contribute an article” or “guest contributor guidelines.” The common phrase gets you the crowded list. The uncommon phrase gets you the quiet one.

Step 2 — Which Filters Cut Down Millions of Results to a Usable List?

A raw search like this often returns over a million pages. You narrow it with five filters, applied in this order:

  1. One page per domain — stops one blog from filling your list with ten of its own articles
  2. Exclude homepages and subdomains — keeps you on actual editorial pages, not marketing pages
  3. Domain Rating — set your 30-to-60 (or higher) range from Phase 1
  4. Website traffic — set your minimum, 1,000 or higher
  5. Published date: Last 90 days — filters out ghost blogs that stopped posting years ago
RESULT COUNT AS FILTERS STACKwatch it drop
2.1M raw query
640K one page / domain
210K editorial pages only
4,800 DR + traffic floor
390 last 90 days

Step 3 — How Do You Read the “Websites” Tab to Spot the Best Prospects?

Click the “Websites” tab above your results. This view groups your list by domain instead of by page, and shows an Authors column. Sort that column high to low.

A site with 40 listed authors accepts outside writers routinely. A site with one author writes everything in-house and is a harder pitch. This single sort saves you from emailing sites that were never going to say yes.

Method 02

How Do You Use Link Intersect to Find “Warm Lead” Guest Post Opportunities?

Content Explorer finds sites that publish guest content. Link Intersect finds sites that are already primed to link to something like your content, because they are doing it for your competitors right now.

What Is the Link Intersect Warm Lead Method?

The logic is simple. If a blog links out to three of your direct competitors but has never linked to you, that editor clearly accepts outside links in your space. You are not cold-pitching. You are pitching a door that is already half open.

How Do You Set Up a Link Intersect Search Step by Step?

  1. Go to Site Explorer, then click Link Intersect in the left menu
  2. Enter the URLs of your top three direct competitors in the “targets” field
  3. Enter your own domain in the “but doesn’t link to” field
  4. Click Show link opportunities
  5. Filter the results by Platform: Blog to strip out directories and forums

What is left is your warm lead list. Every domain on it already links to people who do what you do.

Why Does a Site Linking to 3 Competitors (Not You) Matter?

Because it removes the biggest unknown in guest posting: does this editor even accept relevant outside links? You already have the answer. They have said yes at least three times before, just never to you yet.

Method 03

How Do You Use the Author Footprint Method to Find Hidden Guest Post Sites?

Some of the strongest guest post sites never run a public “write for us” page. They only publish outside writers through direct relationships. Content Explorer and Link Intersect can miss these entirely. The author footprint method does not.

What Is an Author Footprint and Why Does It Work?

A serial guest blogger in your niche has already done your vetting for you. If a recognized voice in your industry writes for five different publications, those five publications are open doors, even if none of them advertise it.

How Do You Search for an Author’s Name in Content Explorer?

Search the author’s full name in quotation marks, using the author: operator: author:"Jane Whitfield". Combine it with a niche term to avoid pulling in a different person with the same name, for example author:"Jane Whitfield" AND SaaS.

Which Sites Only Accept Guest Posts Through Relationships, Not Public Pages?

Usually the bigger, more established names in a niche. These sites skip the public pitch page on purpose, to control volume and quality. Seeing a guest author’s byline on one of these sites is proof the door is open, even without a visible submission form.

Method 04

How Do You Find Guest Post Opportunities From Your Competitors’ Backlinks?

Your competitors have already done years of guest post outreach. A quick competitor backlink analysis shows you every site that said yes to them. You can read that record directly.

How Do You Pull a Competitor’s Full Backlink List in Ahrefs?

Go to Site Explorer, enter your competitor’s domain, and click Backlinks in the left-hand menu. Export the full list as a CSV. Repeat this for each of your top three to five competitors, and keep each list on its own tab in a spreadsheet.

How Do You Filter Out Low-Value Links Before Building Your Prospect List?

Not every backlink came from a guest post, and not every guest post link is worth chasing. Sort your export into four buckets:

Keep

Contextual, editorial linksThe strongest signal — a real writer linked out naturally inside an article.

Drop

Affiliated sitesTwo properties owned by the same company cross-linking each other, not useful to you.

Drop

Sponsored postsA paid placement, which tells you the site sells links rather than accepts pitches.

Drop

Blog commentsRarely worth anything for guest post outreach.

Keep the first bucket. Discard or deprioritize the rest.

How Do You Use Content Gap to Find What a Site Is Missing?

Go to Site Explorer, click Content Gap, enter the target site’s domain in the main box, then enter two or three of its competitors above it. Ahrefs shows you keywords those competitors rank for that your target site does not.

Turn that gap into your pitch line directly: “I noticed your competitors rank for [keyword], but your site doesn’t have a guide on it yet. I have a 2,000-word piece ready that would close that gap.” Personalize the specifics for every prospect — never copy-paste the whole line.
Quality Control

How Do You Vet a Guest Post Prospect Before Pitching?
(The Practitioner’s “Sniff Test”)

Finding a site is step one. Before I let any prospect onto our outreach sheet at Backlink Garden, it passes five checks. Here is each one, the way I actually run it.

Check 01

Domain Rating Trend

Open the domain in Site Explorer and look at the DR graph over time. A steady, gradual climb signals natural link growth. Sharp spikes followed by steep drops usually mean a private blog network got caught and deindexed.

Check 02

Traffic Cliff-Edge

Check the Organic Traffic graph. A vertical drop — say 50,000 visits to 2,000 in a month — usually means a core update penalized the site. A slow seasonal dip is different and often normal.

Check 03

Niche Relevance

A site’s name can lie. Click Organic Keywords and check what it actually ranks for, plus its traffic-by-country split, since 90% of readers in the wrong country won’t help your local rankings.

Check 04

Outbound Link Health

Click Outgoing Links, then Linked Domains. A site with 200 referring domains but 3,000 outbound linked domains is very likely selling links. Scan for niche pollution too.

Check 05

Editorial Integrity

Scroll a handful of recent articles. Check for a real author name and bio, confirm the person on LinkedIn, and check publish dates for a consistent schedule. Generic 500-word posts with no real detail are a sign of low editorial standards, no matter how good the DR number looks.

Prioritization

How Do You Organize and Prioritize Your Guest Post Prospect List?

Once you have twenty or thirty vetted prospects, do not treat them all the same. Some deserve a custom pitch. Others just need a solid template.

What Data Points Should Your Master Sheet Include?

Keep a spreadsheet or a CRM like Buzzstream or Pitchbox with these columns at minimum: domain, DR, monthly organic traffic, editor contact, and a gap-topic column pulled from your Content Gap research.

How Do You Tier Prospects by Priority?

Tier 1

DR 70+ · 50,000+ traffic · recognized names

Needs a fully custom pitch, ideally with original data or an expert interview attached.

Tier 2

DR 40–69 · 5K–50K traffic · niche authorities

A strong template works here, as long as the first two lines are personalized to their content.

Tier 3

DR 25–39 · 1K–5K traffic · smaller blogs

Build topical relevance and link diversity, even if a single link carries less weight than Tier 1.

Outreach

How Do You Pitch and Write a Guest Post That Gets Accepted?

Finding a great site does nothing if the pitch never gets opened.

How Do You Find the Right Editor to Pitch?

Check the site’s About or Team page first. If that comes up empty, search the person’s name on LinkedIn. Most publications have a managing editor or head of content whose name is one search away.

What Makes an Outreach Email Get Opened and Read?

Personalization, not volume. Editors at active blogs get dozens of generic pitches a week. Mentioning a specific recent article they published, and connecting your idea directly to their content, is what separates a read email from a deleted one.

How Do You Outline a Guest Post Using Keyword Gap Data?

Go to Keywords Explorer, enter your target topic, scroll to the SERP overview, select the top-ranking pages, and open them in Content Gap. The keywords those pages share become your H2 subtopics — the same research method we use to structure client content at Backlink Garden before a single word gets written.

Measurement

How Do You Track Whether Your Guest Post Actually Worked?

A published guest post is not the finish line. The real measure is what it does to your rankings over the following weeks.

How Do You Measure Ranking and Traffic Impact From a Guest Post Link?

Add the guest post’s URL, and the page it links to, into Ahrefs’ Rank Tracker. Use the Annotations or Tags feature to mark the exact date the post went live. Watch for movement in average position and traffic for your target keywords starting a few weeks after publish.

How Often Should You Refresh Your Guest Post Prospect List?

Once a month. Re-run your Content Explorer searches with the freshness filter to catch newly active blogs before other SEOs find them. If a previously good site suddenly shows a traffic cliff, move it to a do-not-contact list. If a site performed well for you, circle back after three to six months with a fresh pitch instead of treating it as a one-time placement.

Avoid These

What Mistakes Should You Avoid When Looking Up Guest Post Opportunities on Ahrefs?

  • ×

Chasing Domain Rating alone and ignoring relevance and traffic. A high-DR site with no real readers in your space passes little value.

  • ×

Relying on one generic footprint search and stopping there. Rotating your query phrasing surfaces sites your competitors never found.

  • ×

Sending the same pitch to every prospect on your list. A copy-pasted email is easy for an editor to spot and easy to ignore.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Guest Blogging Still Effective for SEO in 2026?
Yes, when the target site is relevant and genuinely read by humans. Low-quality guest posting on spam sites lost its value years ago, but a well-placed post on an established, active blog still passes real link equity and referral traffic.
How Much Does Ahrefs Cost for Guest Post Prospecting?
Ahrefs’ entry-level paid plans start in the range most solo bloggers and small businesses can manage monthly, with higher tiers unlocking more domain crawls per day for agencies running prospecting across many client sites. Exact pricing changes over time, so check Ahrefs’ own pricing page for current numbers.
Should You Prioritize Domain Rating or Traffic When Choosing a Site?
Neither alone. A high DR with no traffic often signals link manipulation. High traffic with no relevance to your niche wastes your placement. Look for both together, alongside topical relevance, before you commit outreach time.
How Many Guest Posts Should You Pitch Per Month?
More than you think you can handle. Rejection and silence are normal even for strong pitches, since editors are busy and inboxes are full. Pitching in volume, while keeping every pitch personalized, keeps your pipeline moving instead of stalling on one or two responses.
Can You Get Referral Traffic From Guest Blogging, Not Just Links?
Yes, though expectations should stay realistic. Referral traffic from a single guest post is usually modest compared to a site’s overall organic traffic. The bigger long-term value tends to come from the link equity and relationship built with the editor, which can lead to repeat placements.
